Controlling the Seemingly Uncontrollable (devotional)

At one point or another in your life you may have heard the phrase, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” There are a fair amount of people out there who believe this and think that words aren’t really important or have that much impact whether for good or for bad. As believers in Jesus what are we to think when it comes to our words and if they are important or not. Well, let’s look at some scripture and see what it says.

Proverbs 18:21 - Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Job 22:28 - You will also declare a thing, And it will be established for you; So light will shine on your ways.

James 3:10 - Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

After taking the time to read the scriptures what did you see about the impact of our words? Hopefully you saw that our words can bring both blessing and curses as well as life and death. Also, the words we declare are the things that get established. James chapter 3 talks about how difficult it can be to tame the human tongue but thank God we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us as Philipians 4:13 tells us. As we move forward let’s ask God to help us speak the right things, such as His promises from His word or prophetic words we have received in the past, so that those things get established in our lives and not anything evil or negative.
